figueira squareFIGUEIRA SQUARE
The Figueira square is located next to Martim Moniz square.
In the 15th century a big hospital was built on this square (Hospital de Todos os Santos), but it was totally destroyed after the 1755 earthquake.
The square was all rebuilt after this big earthquake, during the government of Marquês de Pombal, minister of the Kingdom of D. José I, who was responsible for all the planning, reconstruction and restoration works in this area, which was much damaged, and that is why this part of Lisbon is called “Baixa Pombalina”.
In 1885, a covered market was built here (it was demolished in 1950), and Figueira square became the biggest market of Lisbon.
Figueira square maintains the original 4 floor buildings that house shops, restaurants and the most pleasant “esplanadas”, where you can have a cup of traditional coffee “bica”.
In the center of this square, there is a bronze statue of King João I, a work of Leopoldo de Almeida.

The Santa Justa Elevator was built in 1902 by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, and is one the the most interesting monuments in dowtown area.
In Gothic Revival Romatic style, it is also know by Carmo Elevator, since it serves as link between Rua do Ouro and Rua do Carmo.
It started to work by steam, and in 1907 started to work by electric energy, being the only vertical lift in Lisbon.
On the top of the Elevator there is a cafeteria where you have a wonderful panoramic view over the city center and the river Tagus.

The downtown of Lisbon also known as Baixa Pombalina, was totally rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake by Marquês de Pombal and includes the Terreiro do Paço, Rossio and Praça da Figueira.
The lower part is formed by a set of perpendicular streets, being the central one Rua Augusta.
On the end of Rua Augusta, there is a wonderful arch which leads to Terreiro do Paço.
All the buildings in this area have a similar architecture (Pombaline style), with 4 floors, with ground floors used for shops and the upper floors for housing.
This is truly the hearth of Lisbon.

Rua Augusta is the main street of Baixa Pombalina, linking Terreiro do Paço and Rossio square.
It is a long pedestrian street, with many different shops, restaurants and also street artists and sellers.
Here you can find everything, not forgetting the traditional flower sellers and hot chestnut sellers.
The street is filled with street cafés with most pleasant esplanades and is one good example of the pombaline architecture, since its buildings are well preserved.

The Gloria elevator links the Restauradores square to the typical Bairro Alto (the stop is next to the wonderful Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara where you can have a wonderful view over the city).
It was inaugurated in 1825, and conceived by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, it started to work by steam and only in 1914 with electric energy.
Two elevators work simultaneously, one ascending and one descending the hill.

The St. George’s castle is located in one of the highest hills of Lisbon, and the first construction dates back to the 2nd century B.C.
Researches concluded that since the 6th century B.C., many different civilizations settled here, from the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors.
It was conquered from the Moors by the 1st Portuguese King, D. Afonso Henriques in 1147.
The castle received important conservation and improvement works from 1940 until 1990, and is today considered one of the most emblematic monuments in Lisbon.
It offers his visitants beautiful gardens and from its viewpoints you can see almost every part of the city. There you can see a multimedia show (Olsipónia), a dark camera (Ulisses Tower – a 360º journey over Lisbon), an exhibition area, a restaurant “Casa do Leão” and thematic shops.

Alfama is one of the most typical quarters in Lisbon, and it is very much worth a visit to better understand the spirit and soul of the city.
It is located between St. George’s Castle and Jardim do Tabaco dock, with narrow winding streets and tiny alleys, which symbolizes the Moorish influence in Lisbon.
During the Moorish occupation, Alfama constituted the whole city which spread later to the West (Baixa Pombalina area).
It was inhabited by fishermen and poor people, and here you can have a glimpse of lifestyle in an old quarter, listening to Fado and smelling the grilled sardines.

Situated in the typical Alfama district, the Museum of Fado also known as the House of Fado and Portuguese Guitar, opened to public in September 1998.
The Museum tells the story of Fado Music, from its primordial origins in the alleys and taverns, to aristocratic salons, theater, radio, film, television and Fado Houses.
It includes a permanent exhibition, document centre, shop, Auditorium, school and restaurant.
The Fado Museum is very much worth a visit to better understand the meaning of Fado.

LISBON CATHEDRAL (Sé de Lisboa)

The Lisbon Cathedral started to be built in 1147, after the conquest of Lisbon from the moors by D. Afonso Henriques.
It is said that was built over an old Muslim mosque, being the project in Romanesque style and very similar to the Coimbra Cathedral.
However, through the centuries, the cathedral suffered many alterations, mostly in gothic style, with the construction of the Bartolomeu Jones (on the north side), the irregularly shaped Cloister and the new Deambulatory which was ordered the construction by King Afonso the 4th to serve as pantheon for him and his family.
During the 17th and 18th century, several alterations were made in baroque style, changing the decoration of the altars and chancel.
Already in the 20th century, many works were made in order to restore the primary medieval atmosphere of the Cathedral.

SANTO ANTONIO CHURCH

The church of Santo António is located close to the Lisbon Cathedral, and it is said to be built over the place where Santo António lived.
The current church was built between 1767 and 1787, after the original church was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake, according to the project of Architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira.
From the original church only the crypt is visible. The façade in is Baroque, with Rococo and Neo classic architectonic elements.
Inside the church you can observe some paintings from the renowned Pedro Alexandrino, as well as 18th century glazed tiles.

This is the oldest market still taking place in Lisbon, dating from the middle ages (13th century).
The name Feira da Ladra, actually means Thieves Market, and takes place every Tuesday and Saturday in early morning in Campo de Santa Clara, Sº Vicente de Fora.
Here you can buy everything from books, to clothes, military objects, ceramics, old coins, vinyl records, furniture, etc at reduced prices.

Adress: Largo de Sº Domingos, Lisbon
Situated right next to the Rossio square, this church dates from the 13th century, and is famous for keeping a part of the handkerchief that the shepherd child Lúcia used and part of the chaplet that the shepherd child Jacinta were using when the Lady Mary appeared to them in 1917 (miracle of Fátima).
Although its construction started in 1241, the original project suffered many changes through the centuries and is therefore a mixture of different styles.
The Church served as model for the churches built after the 1755 earthquake, because of its grandiosity and the influence of the great Architect Ludovice.


SÃO CARLOS NATIONAL THEATRE
Adress: Rua Serpa Pinto 9, 1200 Lisboa
The São Carlos National Theatre is the main Opera House in Lisbon.
It was inaugurated in 1793 by Queen Mary I, to replace the Opera Theatre of the Tagus, which was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake and is a project of the architect José Costa e Silva inspired by La Scala in Milan.
In the same square where the theater is located, was born Fernando Pessoa, one of the most important Portuguese poets.


CARMO CONVENT RUINS
Adress: Calçada do Carmo, 40 Lisbon
The Carmo Convent was built in 1389, and is one of the testimonies left by the 1755 earthquake.
It used to be Lisbon’s main gothic church, and was later a military dependence.  It also had a role in the 25th of April 1974 revolution, since it was here that the President Marcelo Caetano refuged himself from the rebellious soldiers.
Now days, it is headquarter of the Portuguese Archaeological Association having in exhibition pieces related to the history of Lisbon, from pre-historic times through the Middle Ages


TERREIRO DO PAÇO
Adress: Praça do Comércio, Lisbon
Also known as Praça do Comércio, is one of the largest squares in Europe with around 36000 square meters.
The name of “Terreiro do Paço” (Royal Palace Square), had its origin in the 16th century when the king changed the Palace from Castelo de São Jorge to this square.
The buildings were all destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, and the square was totally rebuilt by Marquês de Pombal, Minister of King D. José I. Having contributed for the reconstruction plans the bourgeous, financial and business class, explains the later name of “Commerce Square”.
During centuries this square was the great reception hall for visitors arriving by sea, since it was the dock where the Kings and Heads of State would disembark when visiting Lisbon.
Today it is headquarter of governmental departments.
In the center of the square you can observe the statue of King José the 1st, work of the famous sculptor Machado de Castro.
On the north side of the square, there is the Triumphal Arch, which marks the entrance in Rua Augusta and Baixa quarter.

ROSSIO SQUARE
Adress: Rossio Square, Lisbon
Also know by D. Pedro IV Square, it has been for many centuries the heart of Lisbon.
Right in the center of the square, there is a statue of King D. Pedro the 4th who was also the first emperor of Brazil.
In the end of the 19th century, two monumental fountains were built in the square, one on each side of the statue.
In the North side of the square is located the National Theater of D. Maria II, daughter of D. Pedro IV.
It is still a wonderful place to have a coffee, in one of the esplanadas.

 Built in 1886, the Rossio Train station is a masterpiece and a romantic recreation of the Manueline style, designed by the architect José Luis Monteiro.
 It was restored a few years ago, and has a beautiful façade of eight doors and nine windows with a watch in a small turret with an abundant sculptural decoration.
From this station you can catch the train to the wonderful village of Sintra.

The lovely São Nicolau Church is situated right in the Baixa quarter, on the historical Lisboa city centre, in Prata Street.

The origins of this temple date back to the 12th century, yet the present building dates from the 18th century, with many conservation works since then. The project s attributed to the Architect Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos. Recently, in 2003, the Church got several profound conservation and preservation works, endowed with a new fresh ambience.

The Church is characterized by its only nave with the ceiling decorated with paintings of the renowned Pedro Alexandrino, where are represented the three cardinal virtues: Faith, Hope and Charity.

The legendary Saint Roque Church is situated in the typical Bairro Alto old quarter, in the heart of the historical centre of cosmopolitan Lisboa.

The Church construction started in 1506, next to a cemetery where the black plague victims were buried, situated outside the city walls and dedicated to Saint Roch, the protector of those infected with the plague.
Here is established the Saint Roch Fraternity and already in 1553 here is installed the Society of Jesus that builds over the previous construction the building visible nowadays, maintaining a chapel on the inside consecrated to Saint Roch.
In 1768 the Society of Jesus is expelled of Portuguese territory and the Saint Roch Church relinquished to the Lisboa Misericórdia. Nowadays the assets are in exhibition on the Saint Roch Religious Art Museum, by the side of the Church.

This Church, according to the Society of Jesus architectonic convention, presents a sober façade and a spacious and rich interior, composed by eight chapels, in groups of four, profusely decorated in golden carved wood and marble. 

BAIRRO ALTO
Address: Bairro Alto, Lisbon
Bairro Alto is one of the most typical quarters of Lisbon, with its narrow streets and old buildings.
It is one of the most known Lisbon nightlife places, frequented by different generations, since it houses many clubs and bars.
Here you can also find typical grocery and bakery shops, designer ateliers, tattoo and piercing shops, bonding the old and new life styles in one quarter.
It is also known as the intellectuals, artists and bohemians area, right next to Chiado quarter.


CHIADO
Address: Praça Luis de Camões, 1200 Lisboa
Chiado is one of the noblest quarters in Lisbon, situated between Baixa and Bairro Alto.
Here you can find the trendiest shops, art galleries, designer ateliers, bookstores, among others.
In Rua Garret, the main commercial artery of the area, you can visit the famous coffee “A Brasileira”, in which esplanade you will find the bronze figure of the greatest Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa. It is said this was one of his favorite spots in Lisbon.
In Chiado, you can also find Trindade Theatre, São Luiz Theatre, and São Carlos Theatre (Opera House), the Carmo Convent, the National Museum of Modern Art and the churches of Loreto, Nossa Senhora da Encarnação and of Ordem Terceira da Nossa Senhora do Carmo.
 In 1998, a fire destroyed part of the buildings in Chiado, and since then it was subjected to several renovation works, by project of the famous Portuguese architect Siza Vieira.

GINGINHA DO ROSSIO
Address: Largo de Sº Domingos, 8 1150 Lisbon
This bar, named for the cherry brandy for which is famous, is a must for visitors in Lisbon.
It has a typical atmosphere with crowds of people standing in the square and drinking the famous ginginha.
