Also know by D. Pedro IV Square, it has been for many centuries the heart of Lisbon.
Right in the center of the square, there is a statue of King D. Pedro the 4th who was also the first emperor of Brazil.
In the end of the 19th century, two monumental fountains were built in the square, one on each side of the statue.
In the North side of the square is located the National Theater of D. Maria II, daughter of D. Pedro IV.
It is still a wonderful place to have a coffee, in one of the esplanadas.
