The Gloria elevator links the Restauradores square to the typical Bairro Alto (the stop is next to the wonderful Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara where you can have a wonderful view over the city).
It was inaugurated in 1825, and conceived by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, it started to work by steam and only in 1914 with electric energy.
Two elevators work simultaneously, one ascending and one descending the hill.
