The Lisbon Cathedral started to be built in 1147, after the conquest of Lisbon from the moors by D. Afonso Henriques.
It is said that was built over an old Muslim mosque, being the project in Romanesque style and very similar to the Coimbra Cathedral.
However, through the centuries, the cathedral suffered many alterations, mostly in gothic style, with the construction of the Bartolomeu Jones (on the north side), the irregularly shaped Cloister and the new Deambulatory which was ordered the construction by King Afonso the 4th to serve as pantheon for him and his family.
During the 17th and 18th century, several alterations were made in baroque style, changing the decoration of the altars and chancel.
Already in the 20th century, many works were made in order to restore the primary medieval atmosphere of the Cathedral.
