Situated right next to the Rossio square, this church dates from the 13th century, and is famous for keeping a part of the handkerchief that the shepherd child Lúcia used and part of the chaplet that the shepherd child Jacinta were using when the Lady Mary appeared to them in 1917 (miracle of Fátima).
Although its construction started in 1241, the original project suffered many changes through the centuries and is therefore a mixture of different styles.
The Church served as model for the churches built after the 1755 earthquake, because of its grandiosity and the influence of the great Architect Ludovice.
